Thank you for this inspiring article! My daughter will be 7 yrs old in August. We did the expected and put her in kindergarten at 5 1/2. Disaster. So, we took her out. No more school away from home. I've let her play and travel and come into her own as far as reading. She is now showing a real appetite for books, words, letters and all the fun stuff. We both enjoy being at home and she gets to really learn and not just go through the motions.

This is exactly hour my two oldest ones are learning to read. The oldest prefers me to tell her the words rather than sound them out. She's 7.5 years old. And the one just younger than her (6.5) loves to sound things out. Right now we are trying to find books that are interesting to them. 7.5 yo loves horses so we are looking at the Big Apple Barn series (waiting on the library). And the 6.5 yo; we're not sure. She'll read almost anything. And it's always been fits and starts with greater "success" each time. So glad I found this blog. Thanks for your thoughts and posts.

My son is also a visual/auditory learner. He is 6 and just now showing an interest in learning. Mainly to read the directions of certain games he wants to play and the backs of movies he thinks look interesting. He can read words that have meaning to what he needs to do (nightfall, awesome, etc these are cheat codes for a game lol) and is slowly starting to sound out the easier words now that he can read these bigger words. Its fun to watch him learn in his own way.
